Georgia

It was a cold January day when my kids and I made the trip to a shelter just outside Omaha, Nebraska. We had our hearts set on meeting a black lab mix we thought might be the perfect fit for our family. We were nearing the end of the row, discussing the possibility of meeting the second-to-last dog, when I glanced to my right—and there she was. Georgia. She sat quietly, looking up at me with eyes that seemed to say, “I’m the one.”

The volunteer brought her out to a room where we could interact, and Georgia wasted no time. She was immediately curious, eager to meet us as if she had been waiting her whole life for that moment. Now, knowing how wary she can be of strangers, it’s clear it was love at first sight—she felt safe with us right away.

The volunteer explained that they didn’t know much about her past. Georgia had recently been rescued from a high-kill shelter in the South. They estimated she was around two years old and described her as having a sweet, gentle nature.

Two days later, on January 4, 2020, Georgia came home with us—her forever family.

Over the past four years, Georgia has been a blessing in more ways than we could have imagined. In many ways, it feels like she rescued us, too. She has transformed from a shy, reserved dog into a happy, playful companion who loves pets, long walks, and spending time with her humans.

Georgia’s journey is a testament to the power of love and second chances, and we are endlessly grateful she chose us that day.
